I've found out that NUS exam papers are very irritating as these papers contain questions ranging from very easy to extremely difficult.For the extremely difficult questions,you really need to jump through the academic loops in order to understand the questions within the time constraints,eg prove that something is true without any hint,which is merely a single sentence question and worths >10% of the entire papers.Hence,sometimes I find myself stuck in these questions for very long.

I've seen some similar questions from Cambridge which are set with helpful hints.Thus most of the time,I've been able to complete those questions set by Cambridge.If it wasn't for Cambridge,I might stuck in those questions forever.

Although,in my opinion,the standard of YYY university exam papers is average,I can actually score higher in YYY university papers than NUS papers.Quite surprising.

In response to mex's recent post,YYY university,together with Oxbridge and some London unis,is one of the institutuions from which most big companies based in London/EMEA region like to recruit.Some of them even urge the undergraduate students to remember their "big" names so that these companies can hire the students when they graduate.YYY university is also one of the favourite colleges that investment banking companies like to hire from,although most YYY university graduates working in investment banking end up in back office,like IT.Actually,YYY university graduates are more desirable in hedge fund and private equity firms than even Oxbridge graduates.

As one of the government database believes that I'm studying in UK this year when in fact I've deferred my entry,I received an invitation by GIC to attend an information session on Young Professionals Programme.

Fyi,this invitation was sent to only Singaporean students studying overseas.Whereas I've not even received the invitation as a local uni student.

My point is that while many big companies head down to YYY university to recruit the students for either internships or entry-level jobs,I don't see that at NUS.I've actually come across some people who have not even heard of the famous names of international companies even after they graduated from the local unis,like Morgan Stanley,BCG,Accenture,etc,let alone the function of these companies.

Despite the trumpet blowing by the MSM,why is it that local graduates are not as desirable as overseas graduates when it comes to emplyment?I'll answer this question in the next post.

Regular Faculty Staff at Local Universities

If you actually bother to take a look at all the curriculum vitae of all regular faculty staff(assistant professors,associate professors and professors) in almost all departments(except for law and medicine) at all the local universities,almost all of them pursued their PhD overseas,be it US,UK Australia,Hong Kong or even China.Apparantly,since almost all local PhD holders have no tenured professorship at one of the local universities,where do they go eventually?It seems that foreign PhD lecturers are the preferred teaching assets here.

It's also interesting to note that the local universities have a hidden policy of not letting in professors from developed countries,who are so used to academic freedom and unlimited socio-political space of intellectual thoughts and teaching,to teach local students.

Give a thought to it and the answers are simple.Enjoy.

In response to both sq's and mex's latest post,I'm going to relate my personal experience and make my stand on the education policy.

Since primary school,we were subject to streaming to distinguish the so-called 'elites' from the rest through GEP test and Primary 4 streaming test.Only one of my primary school classmates was streamed to EM1.Since then,he refused to talk to the rest of my classmates.What an ungracious person.

There was another streaming during PSLE.I did quite badly for my PSLE that my score was few marks above the 50% mark.Oh wait!Did I really do badly for my PSLE?I wouldn't know at all.The result is not based on how well a candidate do.It's based on how well one fares relative to the entire student population.That was why I ended up in a neighbourhood secondary school.Victim of 'natural selection'.

Life was full of ups and downs at my secondary school.Nevertheless,it has been the most memorable moment in my school life so far.Friendships forged there have been the most lasting so far.There was no sign of 'elites' attitude.Once again,most of my school mates were the victims of 'natural selection'.Only around 30 people in my batch made it to jc.Some of my close friends actually lamented over their results in spite of their hard work.

My prelim result was good enough to enter into one of the top 5 jc.I was in tjc during the 1st 3 months.Having studied in neighbourhood schools for 10 years,it took me much effort to get used to switching to Channel 5 and the new environment.Fortunately,it didn't take me too long to get along with my peers.I was very glad that most of the students that I'd met in tjc weren't as egoistic as I'd expected.

As I couldn't make it to tjc,I was eventually posted to mjc.I'd say that mjc was a pressure cooker as the management of the school has been drilling their students really hard so as to boast ranking on which their performance bonuses are based.It's no wonder 10% of the students on average are either retained or expelled from school due to their poor promotional results.Victims of 'natual selection'.

The most competitive rat race here is perhaps the applications for psc scholarships to study at Ivy League and Oxbridge.Over the past few years,psc scholarships have been awarded to scholars from elite jcs.Not even a chance for anyone from a neighbourhood jc.

Unlike in US where the rich and the poor students are grouped together in the classroom to gain an understanding of diverse backgrounds,streaming at the very young age is actually the main culprit to segregating students into "elite" and "not-so-smart" groups that more or less determine your future and status quo in Singapore.As a result,the social and income disparity arise.It's a social phenomenon that is more apparent here than many other developed countries,such as Japan,US,UK or even South Korea.Wee Shu Min's incident is a classical example of elitism in Singapore.

All thanks to the notion of the eugenics and 'natural selection' by 'you know who'.We've been brainwashed into believing that only academically inclined people can succeed in life.Late bloomers are almost given no chance to succeed in this rat race.

In one of the future posts I'll explain why it's not always the case to succeed in life all the time even if you've the prestigious paper qualification here.

After spending about 15 seconds thinking about how to convince me to move on,some mini director of XXX organisation,which belongs to "ah kong",claimed that the 1st class degree from NUS is as valuable as,if not more than the 1st class degree from YYY university(prestigious few in the UK) and that the former will allow wide range of opportunities to pan out.Yes,talking is free.Where's the concrete evidence?

On the contrary,NUS degree is good,only to get your back stabbed at the age of 35-40 by a foreigner with no reservist liability and with the same qualification(If you know about the situation caused by the FT policy).

Obviously,she didn't know what she was talking about.

I'd my left wisdom teeth removed yesterday.At first,it wasn't painful as there was anaesthetic given.It was 2 hours later that I started to feel the excruciating pain.It was very traumatising to hear the drilling sound during the surgery.It was then that I decided not to have my right wisdom teeth removed.Surprisingly,my pain was alleviated this morning.Just that my chin is a bit swollen.

In the morning,I went for the winching course which was held at an airbase.And I've finally taken a flying helicopter(Porsche if I'm not wrong).Even though the helicopter hovered at only 20 feets for some safety reasons,I enjoyed it very much.

Well it has been almost half a year since I last updated my blog.It's time to update my entry again.

I have experienced some events for the past six months.

From late March to early June,I was actually on some combat course that trains serviceman to fulfill the slogan like Seek,Save,Serve or Bloody Proud etc.Without me explaining,you would know what vocation I was assigned to.It was quite a good experience as I learnt several essential life skills that are going to be very useful in the future,especially when unforeseen circumstance arises.Also,I had met some friends who actually gone through the whole "gruelling" 10-weeks course.And that reminds me of a sergeant who was always tekaning us for the slightest possible mistake that we had made.Soon after,some platoon mates would made fun of him behind him by simply repeating what he had said in a very funny way.I shall not comment how the sergeant tekaned us.Well,to keep it short,the course was one of my,or perhaps,the most memorable event that I have ever gone through so far during my NSF days.

I was then posted back to my same old base.I've been juggling working and slacking since then.Well the days so far are much more relaxed as compared to my previous appointment,or rather vocation.I've never regretted for upgrading my medical status.

What's coming next which I am not so looking forward to is to go to Wallaby in Australia to provide cover for exactly 50 days.Well I'm not kidding.It's both phase 1 and 2.My concerns are boredom could really kill me and how to even take a shower with just one bucket of water everyday.Well see how it goes then.

4)Stay in my current job - very unlikely unless my bosses manage to keep me,but again it's almost impossible due to the regulation set by cpc

Have to take ippt,soc,range which i didn't ever attempt b4...at least ippt and range can lah but soc=gg!!!

Looks like i've to train myself physically everyday,like run 5km in fbo etc etc.

I have finally finished my work as a promoter for the towel gift set at the Centrepoint.
Consider these few possible phrases when i was talking to any customer:
"this is a Givenchy bath towel and it costs $16.90;
this is $8.90 for one Givenchy hand towel;
20% off on top of the original price;
material of Shu Uemura is slightly better than Givenchy as it is v soft and fluffy,therefore more expensive;
this is the sample size of the Givenchy bath towel,though different designs,but same price"
and so on...
Imagine i have to use any of these phrases when talking to abt 40++ customers within half a day...tt's freaking boring and i have to say the same thing again and again and on top of tt the stocks must be fully replenished to ensure tt the managers will not scream at me...utterly boring...
Anyway i made some new friends in Robinson and even other shop as well...i may sound as if i'm giving a speech at Star Academy Award,but i would like to thank:
Ryan,who offered mi the job;
Wei Shuo,who worked in other shift under the same department as mi and also whined with mi like siao;
Aung,my former jc friend working in Robinson,whom i realised tt he has a great sense of humour and he's indeed a v nice person;
promoters in the atrium,like samantha,YGM,wenhan,calvin and his fav. friend,just to name a few;
Aung's friends,who were willing to spend time with me when i was taking stocks and slacking with them lol;
Han Hui(a guy fyi),who is working in Giordano and seizes the opportunity to chat with mi;
and finally Sharon,Sarah,Audrey and Vijay who guide mi along during work.
Now i realised tt we have to work v hard to earn a basic pay of a few bucks per hour,so we have to plan on how to spend our money wisely...indeed i have gained quite a lot of valuable lessons from work and 12 days of working experience is worth the time.

I'm freaking damn worried tt someone will be sued 4 this case and might implicate mi as well...
Anyway i have finished my 'A' level abt 2 weeks ago and most of the papers are manageable except for 2 or 3 papers tt seem really killer papers such tt we did not even expect the qns to be set in tis way...just wait 4 the results loh,no point speculating the grades...
& btw mjc prom nite will be held in 2 days time..some people are really willing to spent large sum of $$$ to dress up 4 the nite,such as wearing blazer,styling hair and so on 4 guys...as 4 me,i will wear a simple and minimal formal dress 4 the nite as i heard tt there will be a lot of opportunities 4 us to dress up during several prom nites in university days & somemore i'm not rich enough 2 have additional make-up...just wondering what will i or rather what will we gonna do aft the nite...go clubbing?have a large gathering at some place?i tink most of the people will go home in the early morning...

Finallly the promos is over!!!Well,i tink i will do quite well for my chem & maths C,but i hav screwed up my f maths and didnt expect physics to be thousand times more difficult than usual though its still manageable 4 mi...Ok lets put the exam matter aside 1st,must enjoy the post promos thingy--going out,chating wif my frenz,etc as far as possible and jus now immediately aft sch i met up wif my great buddy Ryan to watch movie which is entitled The Myth...its abt jackie hu dreamt abt his unforgettable & sweet past wif the princess as an ancient soldier and his drive 4 finding his answers to his illusions...its a v nice film,recommended 4 pple to watch...tts all 4 now and i wanna enjoy more!!!

Its has been 2 weeks since i last updated my blog on 28 August...well i promised myself to study 4 the promo v hard during the holidae...one of the daes during the holi i even studied 4 abt more than 10 hours continuously jus 4 the chem time trial and truly the effort is worth paid off and perhaps i can concentrate less on chem...the subjects tt makes mi woried ar my gp and physics...ok dun worry i will strive to do my best in my promos...apart fr tt sch is as usual loh no difference loh no exciting event loh...ok yesterdae aft sch i went home 1st,had a dinner and went to my best pal,Ryan hse to 'rock n roll' lol haha kiddin actually we studied in his hse for abt 1st 2 hours and aft tt we watched a movie show entited Initial D...the show was v nice,especially the last part when Jay Chou raced against his other 2 competitors and truly he won the race as i could see tt he had the great determination to win aft losing to the professional racer for the 1st time and lastly fr the show i had learnt 1 impt lesson tt is to challenge urself to the fullest limit in order to get the optimum results...aft tt Ryan and i tok crap in the living rm,ranging fr our current life to our personal stuff and joked wif each other until abt 3am...woke up todae at 7am and went back home and slp further until 10.30am,den went cp to teach Qian Hui and Shirley some Maths and Science...aft tt went to play LAN wif my frenz...aft tt went to Heartland mall 4 a while and accompanied my frenz in his hse and finally home sweet home...played dota again wif Jeffrey online...i admitted tt i am a noob in dota haha,always lose out to others but anyway its a nice game indeed...haha tts all 4 now and hope tt i can clear my promos wif a gd results...

Todae was another free dae for mi...In the morning i gave tuition to Bin 'An sis and i was glad tt she was able to grasp one and a half physics chapter in jus 2 hours:)...aft tt i went to hav a haircut such tt my sideburn and the back of the hair ar slightly trimmed but when i looked into the mirror,i felt so ugly and 'nerdy'...anyway i jus hav to wait for a couple of weeks b4 i can change my new hairstyle and beside hair grooming is not so impt aft all...aft tt i met up wif Jeffrey and Peir Hong to study and chat in the void deck...aft tt we went home...i decided to revise intensively aft the teacher's day celebration as promos ar round the corner and its not gonna be easy...shldnt slack anymore!

Hooray!I hav finally set up my personal blog!I can express my feelings through the net haha...anyway todae as usual lor,going to sch is such a routine for anyone of us *sigh*todae I took 2.4km of NARFA run.I didnt run as well as last time as i simply didnt hav the drive to run,and i knew i will fail my narfa ultimately becoz of my pull up and standin broad jump but i tried to pass my running so tt i wouldnt feel so bad after all...after tt was a series of lessons and i didn really pay attention and mdm koh caught mi for not listening to lectures...luckily she didnt ask mi too much qns lol after sch was a listening test which is organised by HKEA...I hav nvr sat such a listening test tt requires candidates to feel in the blanks instead of jus choosing the appropriate option and tis was plain stupid lor...after tt i went back home myself...hopefully tml will be a brand new dae for mi...
